Surface Modification of Carbon Nanotubes as a Key Factor on Rheological Characteristics of Water-Based Drilling Muds
Authors
Abstract:
This study investigates the effect of functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon NanoTube (f-MWCNT) on rheological properties of water-based drilling muds. Functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotube was performed by introducing a hydrophilic functional group onto the surface of nanotubes via acid treatment. In order to guarantee the results, X-ray fluorescence, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were performed on samples. Temperature and mud density variations were also considered along with the effect of f-MWCNT addition. Furthermore, a novel study was performed on the influence of the degree of functionalization on plastic viscosity and yield stress of drilling mud samples. The results obtained from this study revealed that the addition of f-MWCNT greatly affects the rheological characteristics of water-based drilling muds like plastic viscosity, apparent viscosity, yield stress, and thixotropic properties. Moreover, test results indicated that the shear stress versus shear rate diagram fitted well the Herschel-Bulkley rather than the Bingham plastic model.

Polysulfone/carbon nanotubes (PSF/CNTs) nanocomposite membrane was prepared via phase inversion induced by immersion precipitation technique. In addition, the surface of the CNTs were functionalized by polar carboxylic and amine groups to improve the interaction between the CNTs and the polymer matrix. For this purpose, the neat CNTs were chemically treated using sulfuric acid/ nitric acid (H2S...

In this paper, we detail our results for the impact of MWCNT on the thermal and rheological properties of oil-based drilling muds. Our analysis considers the effects of time, temperature, and MWCNT volume fraction. The scanning electron microscopy imaging technique was used to monitor the MWCNTsdispersion quality. The experimental results unveil a considerable enhancement in the thermal conduct...

Study on Rheological Property Control Method of “Three High” Water Based Drilling Fluid
The rheological regulation of the “three high” (high temperature, high density and high salinity) water-based drilling fluid is a worldwide problem due to the combined influence of temperature, solid content and salinity. This paper investigates the factors and regulation methods about rheological property of “three high” water based drilling fluid, and the effects of clay, salinity and weighti...

15 صفحه اولAn Improvement in Thermal and Rheological Properties of Water-based Drilling Fluids Using Multiwall Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT)
Designing drilling fluids for drilling in deep gas reservoirs and geothermal wells is a major challenge. Cooling drilling fluids and preparing stable mud with high thermal conductivity are of great concern. Drilling nanofluids, i.e. a low fraction of carbon nanotube (CNT) well dispersed in mud, may enhance the mixture thermal conductivity compared to the base fluids. Thus, they are potentially ...
